Commonly Asked Questions about going "Pro":
Q. Can I make any money as a PADI Professional Instructor? A. Yes, but the amount depends on where you are planning to start your career. In land locked areas, Instructors usually make a modest fee for their professional services, teaching primarily for the passion and prestige of the sport and to offset their diving expenses. In coastal areas and in the islands, a professional can expect to make a modest living. OF course, the more you have to offer, in any situation, the more you will be worth to a dive center. This is another area where Tri-State Scuba Water Academy can be a benefit to you by offering hands-on retail and technical experience. Q. My work schedule will not permit a trip to Florida for two weeks to do the IDC and IE. Is it possible to do it locally on the weekends? A. Absolutely! All of our professional courses are offered on schedules that will work with most work routines. This saves the cost of travel to Florida, hotel stays and precious vacation time. If our schedule still isn't right for you, private courses are available. Q. Can I use the pool outside of class hours to practice my waternmanship skills? A. Once you have enrolled into a professional course at Tri-State Water Academy, it's just a matter of scheduling the time! Q. Will I be able to teach as soon as I have finished the IE? A. In a very short amount of time! Your IE scores must be processed through PADI and you will have to pay your liability insurance to achieve an "Active Teaching Status". When time is of the essence, the Academy can accomplish this in a few short days. Otherwise, the wait is only a couple of weeks.
"Ever wonder what it personally takes to become a PADI Professional Instructor? The following excerpts were taken from one Instructor Candidates Diving Resume which was recently submitted to PADI for the Instructor Examination."
For me, scuba diving is an additional outlet for my love of outdoor activity. The opportunity to experience and observe new and incredibly diverse ecosystems was one of the primary incentives for my becoming a diver; the desire to help others discover and share in this wonder is key to my desire to become an instructor. Quarry Diving
As a Midwesterner, my local diving is quarry diving. Accordingly, about 60% of my dives to-date have been in quarries within a day’s drive of Cincinnati, OH. While not as colorful and exotic as a Caribbean reef, quarry environments have provided an opportunity to hone skills and observe freshwater ecosystems. Ocean Diving
While the diversity of the ecosystems I have encountered (and studied via PADI AWARE Coral Reef Conservation, Fish Identification and Underwater Naturalist certifications) is a major draw to the salt-water, so is the opportunity to experience a broad range of conditions, skills and dive plans: shore diving, boat diving, drift diving, diving walls and wrecks, focusing on tiny reef dwellers for macro-photography, confronting surf and surge, etc. “Staff” Diving
Since making the decision to become a PADI professional, I have enjoyed the opportunity to work with both adults and youth enrolled in programs offered by Tri-State Scuba Water Academy, the Cincinnati PADI 5-Star IDC with which I am affiliated. Along the way, I have been mentored by some truly outstanding professionals who have been stellar role models and guides for me as I develop my dive leadership and training skills.
From my initial PADI Open Water instruction onward, I have been lucky to be mentored by the staff and “family” affiliated with Tri-State Scuba, whose willingness to share their knowledge has helped me develop both my skills and enthusiasm. I look forward to being able to return this favor, and continue the chain, by helping bring new divers into our “family” as their PADI Open Water Scuba Instructor. Disclaimer-Everyone does not have to be as dedicated, sincere, enthusiastic and energetic as this candidate, but it sure helps!
